COACH CAMPBELL’S GAME RECAP
The first game of the regular season saw the Nomads Senior Women take on Barrie in perfect conditions. The team was made to work hard before the first whistle was even blown. For what must have been a very good reason, the ground staff painted the lines on the field whilst the teams warmed up, casually moving long lengths of string through warm up drills, much to the delight of the coaches.
The Nomads started the game slowly, allowing Barrie to dictate the pace of the game and créate messy ruck ball, legally of course. Patches of brilliance saw several line breaks which were nipped in the bud by some excellent scrambling defence from Barrie. One moment that typifed the first halve was a 5 metre scrum on Barries line. The Barrie scrum halve fed the ball, a monster scrum turned the ball over and was then promptly kicked forward by the Nomads 8 who was keeping an eye out for the opposing players to take the ball. A moment that will no doubt be brought up again on a particular evening.
A breakout try from debutant Jean Baker took the Nomads into the half with a 7-0 lead, with the message being centred around tidying up the ruck ball in the second half, and turning bear/beer hugs into chop tackles.
The second half performance went up 10 notches from the Nomads, tidy ruck ball and strong tackling saw tries being scored in quick succession. Returning Nomad Desaun Isiah crossed for two tries, and back rower Zuzana Wandas broke the line from 30 metres out before dotting down for her maiden try. Constant pressure from the Nomads paid dividends with Jean crossing for her second, and what could claim to be the try of the season so far as Grace Rivera started and finished a 150 metre passage of catch and pass between what seemed like 20 hands at the time.
With Clare Street knocking the conversions from everywhere, and Jean taking the glory conversions from out in front, the score finished with Nomads on top 43-5.
The ladies have a break this weekend, before taking on Missisauga on Junior Nomads Day. Look forward to seeing all of the supporters there!!!!
