Senior Men Update
A promising Season Awaits
Mixed results have masked a very promising pre-season for the Nomads men, but the 1st XV and 3rd XV are coming off wins, while the 2nd XV are showing signs that a win is around the corner. Andrew Prior’s weight-training initiative from January onwards has shown results on the pitch with some strong physical performances. This season has also seen as many as 30 new players joining the club or moving up from juniors.

Senior Women Update
A new coach, a new approach, a new team
The Senior Women set the tone for the 2016 season in the first two minutes of their game against Barrie. After scoring a try off the kick-off, the ladies went on to win 44-0. The game boasted four first time tries, two of which came from rookie players. Our batch of new recruits have bolstered the team’s performance on the pitch, and have become true Nomads off the pitch, as well. Coach Campbell continues to impress upon the girls the values of focus and commitment.

Pre-season Games & Training
Getting prepped to kick some butt
The season is warming up as the senior teams move outside to get their tackle on. Both teams are practicing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Women at Sir Winston Churchill, the Men at Christie Pitts. Practice for both teams starts at 6:30 p.m. sharp and the captains ask that players be dressed and ready to go at that time. When Oakwood and Eglinton Flats are open, we will send out an announcement via Facebook and the website.
The men have only one pre-season game on April 30 against Burlington in Burlington. The women have two pre-season games scheduled, both are away games: April 30 (Oshawa tournament) and May 7 (vs. Oakville).

Gossip for the water cooler
- Our new alumni rep is Cynthia Moore! Although Cynthia doesn’t play rugby, she comes from a Nomads family. Her husband, David Moore, is a Nomad alumn, and her son Dylan currently plays for us. If you don’t know Cynthia by name, we bet you know her house! For the past handful of years, the Moores have charitably lent us their garden for Strawberries and Champagne. Cynthia, who was a wine rep in her previous incarnation, loves to throw a good party and she can’t wait to get our alumni more involved with Nomads affairs.
- Our very own Nomad, Laura Russell has been nominated by Rugby Canada as one of our nation’s best 15s players. We’ll find out if she takes home the prize on April 15!
- The senior women have an amazingly qualified coach who’s coming from the land of the hakka to teach us proper Kiwi 15s form. More details on the new senior women’s coach coming soon.

July Recap
What a fabulous month it has been for Nomads rugby. Over a hundred Nomads converged onto BMO Field to watch both Kelly Russell and Lucas Hammond taking home gold medals at the Pan Am games. On top of that, Laura Russell was named as Canada’s captain for the Women’s Rugby Super Series in Alberta. On the home front, Nomads Day 2015 was a rousing success with Nomads young and old enjoying the day. This weekend will be a big game for the women who have made the playoffs. They will faceoff against Oshawa (at Oshawa) this Saturday. As for the men, they’re half way through the season and truckin’ along. Considering it’s their first year playing up a division, we couldn’t be prouder of their performance. All three senior men’s teams will be playing in Ajax. |

|
Alumni Profile: Michelle Baker
Retired as a Nomad player in 2012. |
|
|
Position: Spent her entire time with the Nomads in the front row as prop. Favourite Nomad moment: It’s a blur of the many phenomenal tours, with Quebec City being one of the most memorable. Climbing fences, sneaking into concerts, not playing rugby, but getting to wear a sumo suit… Her best memory on the pitch: Every single scrum with my favourite front row partners, Erin Leaman and Michelle Walker. Post-rugby pastime: Spending time chasing around her 18-month-old daughter, who Michelle claims has better ball handling skills than she ever did! Who’s she going to support during world cup: Canada! |
